Bring Your Own Calculator

Calculators cannot be found at the test center, and you're not allowed to give away a calculator.

Quick Facts

  • Only the calculators on this page are acceptable to be used for the Math Test, Calculator portion of the test.
  • You should not utilize an electronic calculator during those Reading, Writing and Language, or Math Test--No Calculator sections. You must remove the calculator away during these portions that comprise the assessment.
  • You'll be kicked out and your scores canceled when you use your calculator to give out information during the exam, or to remove test questions or the answers from the testing room.

Calculator Smarts

  • Bring your personal calculator. It's not possible to share one.
  • Don't bring a completely new calculator. Bring one you're comfortable with. Learn to take the test using the same calculator you'll use for the day of your test.
  • This Math Test includes some questions where it's better not to use the calculator, even though you're permitted to.
  • It can be beneficial to complete scratch work from the test book. Write down your thoughts before taking your calculator.
  • Check that your calculator is in operating condition and that the batteries are in good condition. The test facility will not provide additional calculators or batteries. If your calculator is damaged during the test and you don't have a backup, you'll be required to finish the test without it.

You are allowed to use calculators only to take the Subject Tests in Mathematics. Read the guidelines and rules.

Acceptable Calculators

If you have the calculator with characters that are at least one inch tall or if the calculator has a display with a raised top that may be visible other test-takers, you will be placed in the test at the discretion of the test coordinator.

Only handheld devices powered by batteries can be used for testing. Power cords are not permitted.

Calculators allowed during testing include:

  • Most graphing tools (see chart)
  • All Scientific Calculators
  • The four-function function calculator, in all its forms (not advised)

Unacceptable Calculators

You are not allowed to use any of the following items as calculators: calculator:

  • Laptops or other computers tablets, mobile phones smartwatches, or wearable technology
  • Models that are able to connect to the Internet, have wireless, Bluetooth or cellular audio/video recording and playback, camera, or other features of a smartphone.
  • Models that have a computer-style (QWERTY) keypad pen input or stylus
  • Models that have electric outlets, produce noise or are made of paper tape
  • In addition, the use of hardware peripherals such as a stylus with an approved calculator is not allowed. Some models with touchscreen capabilities aren't allowed (e.g., Casio ClassPad).
